Evolution of Medicine Podcast (general)
State of the Evolution

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we are back with the fifth installment of the "State of the Evolution" with co-founders of the Evolution of Medicine, James Maskell and Gabe Hoffman.  Twice a year we look back at ground take-in the last six months and look forward to the next six. We're excited to share with you what's happened and what to expect during the first half of 2017.

This has been a huge acceleration for our organization. James published his book The Evolution of Medicine. We launched the Evolution of Medicine Practice Accelerator and as always, we've had our monthly the Functional Forum episodes. We've recently introduced the "Future of Functional in 5" which allows our community of practitioners to share their stories and gifts with the whole community. Our Functional Forum meetups continue to facilitate collaboration and community building for practitioners on a local level.  James and Gabe also discuss what's new for the Evolution of Medicine and share details about a course on building a Functional Membership practice, as well as bringing new doctors into our community consistently.

Thanks for being a part of our community and here's to the next step in the Evolution. As ever, we can only achieve our vision by supporting you to achieve yours and so here's to a transformational 2017.

On this podcast you will hear:

  • a review of the past 6 months of Forums and new projects
  • what to expect from the next six months
  • a review from the founder of the current "State of the Evolution"

What Functional Medicine can Learn from Crossfit

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we welcome Brian Mulvaney, Director of Strategy at CrossFit. If you’ve been part of our community for awhile, you know that we’re working towards helping create 100k micropractices. Our plan for micropractices very much mirrors the Crossfit strategy – reduce the overhead, empower individuals to become entrepreneurs.

Listen in as Brian describes the evolution of CrossFit over the last 15 years and shares not only the key lessons that our movement can learn from theirs, but also the clear and present opportunity for clinicians to partner with their local CrossFit boxes to create these new centers of health creation.

On this podcast you will hear:

  • The origin story of CrossFit and the early days of web-based education
  • How the first affiliates broke through barriers to replicate successfully
  • The opportunity for CrossFit and Functional Medicine to merge for community health

This is such an exciting 45 minutes and required listening whether you are running a practice and are looking for a community of new patients or looking to start a new “Functional Micropractice”.

Success Leaves Clues

This week on the Evolution of Medicine Podcast, we feature Dr. Mary Caire who has transformed her former practice into a successful Functional Medicine practice.  Dr. Caire was the inspiration for our new series of podcasts called "Success Leaves Clues".

The IFM survey data showed that very few practitioners were successful when attempting to make this transition and felt there were too many barriers to entry when transitioning from traditional western medicine to a Functional Medicine practice.  We're so grateful to Dr. Caire for sharing her journey, tips, and successes to help shorten the learning curve for the rest of us.

In this podcast you will hear:

  • Dr. Caire's journey from physiatrist to a Functional Medicine practitioner
  • what percentage of income comes from which sources in Dr. Caire's practice
  • how to use genetic testing to motivate patients

What we really want to do is hear from doctors who have made the transition, successfully. If you are one of those practitioners or know someone, please share your story. Write to us at support@goevomed.com

IHPC Part 2: Activating Through CoverMyCare.Org

Last week on the podcast we shared the epic history that took integrative medicine from quackery to the future of chronic disease management. One of the major recent victories, among many achieved by the Integrative Health Policy Consortium (IHPC), was the non-discrimination clause (Section 2706) in the Affordable Care Act that should have opened integrative medicine to the masses through their insurance.

We say ‘should have’ as the insurance companies have generally been out of compliance with that directive. The IHPC has come up with a plan (and a website) to fight this, called CoverMyCare.org, with the goal of forcing insurance companies to be compliant with the ACA.

We welcome to the podcast IHPC Executive Director Alyssa Worstel and board member Susan Haeger as they share the success of the IHPC in getting the wording into the ACA, and how our new brand of health professionals, as transformative community leaders, can work together to enforce compliance with this law and take integrative medicine to it’s rightful place in medicine, primary care.

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • How the IHPC came to being and how it supports its 400k license integrative health professionals
  • What the Section 2706 non discrimination provision of ACA should have done
  • How you can get involved to help force insurance companies into compliance
