Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast! On this episode, guest host Kristen Brokaw talks with Dr. Jarrod Spencer, a sports psychologist, speaker, author and consultant, about helping healthcare providers overcome burnout in their careers. Just like athletes must continuously work on their mindsets and remain focused to perform at the top level, healthcare providers must take steps to support their mental resilience. The problem is, 92% of healthcare providers report feeling burned-out in their careers, and the majority also admit they would never seek professional help. As Dr. Spencer discusses in this episode, it’s time to erase the stigma of mental health challenges in the healthcare profession and empower providers to overcome burnout and become the best versions of themselves. Enjoy this incredible conversation! Highlights include:

  • The striking similarities between athletes and healthcare providers
  • How we can give a voice to the topic of mental health in the healthcare profession, which has long been stigmatized
  • Steps healthcare providers can take to address burnout
  • The importance of building a supportive, engaged team
  • Why healthcare providers should consider consulting a psychologist to help keep their practices running smoothly

In addition to running successful group visits in her practice, Swathi has tapped into the local community, like restaurants and yoga studios, to build new business and maintain the health of the patients she’s seeing in-clinic. Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast! In this episode, James talks with Michelle Peris, ND, creator and facilitator of Rebel Tribe, a community group of women seeking support and health education. She has successfully made group visits sexy—helping women of all walks of life and health statuses build their own tribes and improve their health and wellbeing. A common concern we hear from practitioners starting out with group visits is that their patients won’t be interested in participating. But what’s different about Michelle’s groups is that that they are aspirational; the foundation of the groups encourages people to grow into better versions of themselves, and to draw on the bravery of their co-members to do it. Functional medicine groups are inspirational in that way—they channel community into a force that is powerful enough to motivate lasting behavior change. It was an excellent 30-minute conversation with Michelle, and she shared great insight that will be valuable to anyone looking for strategies to successfully market group visits and recruit patients. Highlights include:

  • What inspired Michelle to pursue group visits in her practice
  • How to demedicalize the marketing of group visits and attract more participants
  • Stories of transformation from Rebel Tribe groups
  • How the Practice Accelerator helps facilitate group visits in any practice

Group Visit Series Part 10: If an Ophthalmologist Can Run Group Visits…

Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast! This week, we sit down with Shalesh Kaushal, MD, PhD for Part 10 of our Group Visit Series. This episode looks at group visits from a different perspective—a much narrower one than we have previously shared, and I really love that. If you’ve been following our series or are familiar with group visits, you know that they are effective in so many areas of medicine, but in general, they affect the reversal of chronic diseases. In this episode, we’re talking about group visits in a very specific application: retina disease.

Dr. Kaushal is a pioneer on this front, bringing the power of group visits and community to super specific disease cases. His work exemplifies the broad range of application group visits can have, and how their positive impact can reach across the spectrum of medicine, from the general to the specific. If an ophthalmologist can run group visits, so can you! Highlights of this episode include:

  • How Dr. Kaushal got his start in functional medicine
  • When he realized he needed to deliver care in a group format
  • What he has learned from his work as a medical specialist and group visit practitioner
  • How he has used Group Visit Toolkits in practice
  • And so much more!

Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine Podcast! This week, we’re talking with Jeremie Kubicek, the well-known speaker and bestselling author who has appeared on our podcast twice before to discuss business aspects of functional medicine practice. In this episode, Jeremie discusses strategies for goal setting in 2020—something we’re all thinking about as 2019 winds down, and even more poignant as we prepare to embark on a new decade. What I appreciated most about the conversation with Jeremie is that he shares actionable steps to make your vision for 2020 a reality. It’s not about avoiding the obstacles that will come your way, but planning how you will overcome them. The process is self-reflective and, I think, a necessary exercise for anyone who wants to make positive change happen in 2020. Highlights from this episode include:

  • Learning from Mount Everest’s Sherpas to become a leader worth following
  • Jeremie’s strategy for identifying pain points, setting your vision for the future and overcoming resistance
  • How overcoming obstacles to your vision might be as simple as how you communicate
  • Thinking about group visits as a way to mitigate common sources of dissatisfaction for practitioners

Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast! This episode is the second installment in our series with Carrie Jones, ND, MPH and DUTCH Test. Dr. Carrie Jones is a force in the functional medicine community, a modern doc with a holistic approach who can appreciate the best of both medical practices. In her own words, she “helps hormonally challenged people feel less crazy” by using testing and her own extensive knowledge to help people understand their hormones so they can feel empowered to take control of their health.

In this episode, we take a deeper look at stress resilience and share concrete ways you can use the cortisol awakening response with your patients. We also discuss autoimmune patients, some of the most challenging cases to tackle, and how the CAR influences immunity. It was a fascinating 30 minutes, and I think you’ll really enjoy it. Highlights include:

Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast! This episode is our second with Jeremie Kubicek, entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and author of 5 Voices: How to Communicate Effectively with Everyone You Lead. The book holds the key to unlocking your capacity to have honest conversations and build deeper, more authentic relationships, and has been an invaluable resource to companies worldwide. In our first episode with Jeremie, he discussed his work in identifying the 5 Voices (the Pioneer, the Connector, the Creative, the Guardian, and the Nurturer) and how they help you discover what your leadership voice sounds like to others and how to hear and value others’ voices.

In this episode, we talk about how you can apply this incredible understanding of emotional intelligence and behavior patterns to your staff. Your staff is truly the front lines of your practice—the way they interact with your patients, their colleagues and even you have an impact on the overall culture of your practice and the patient experience. As the “gardener” of your practice, it is your responsibility to help every “plant” (your employees), no matter their temperament, thrive. By committing to this, you’ll not only see your practice culture and staff retention improve, but also patient satisfaction. It was a fascinating 30 minutes discussing this important but often overlooked topic in healthcare—enjoy! Highlights include:

  • How to use the 5 Voices methodology to support your staff and help them become a magnet for new patients
  • How to take ownership of your role as “gardener” of your practice greenhouse, and learn what your staff needs to feel supported and thrive in their roles
  • How understanding yourself and your natural tendencies can take your listening and relational abilities to a whole new level
  • How the different personality types execute and what they need to operate at their best
  • And so much more!

No matter what nutrition philosophy you recommend, nearly everyone agrees fasting or cleansing is beneficial to healing.

But…how to guide your patients safely and successfully on a practitioner-led fasting program is no small feat (especially considering how many people suffer from chronic conditions).

If you struggle with uncertainty about implementing fasting programs in your practice then this week’s podcast: Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine: The Power of Fasting is the tutorial you’ve been looking for.

Join your host, James Maskell and fasting expert Dr. Felice Gersh, on how to safely run a clinical fasting program that gets results.

Dr. Lokken didn’t know she wanted to be an entrepreneur or a functional medicine doctor until she came across Dr. Dale Bredesen and Kelly Brogan’s work, discovered the Evolution of Medicine book and enrolled in the Practice Accelerator program.

From there, she implemented what she learned to establish Brain Health Institute, and realized entrepreneurship provided the life and freedom she had always dreamed of.

Tune in to hear more of Dr. Lokken’s inspiring story and learn:

  • How she started up Brain Health Institute while keeping her positions as medical director at the VA Hospital and professor at University of Alabama

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast we are sharing a special interview that was part of the "11 days of Global Unity" whch featured luminaires like Dr. Deepak Chopra, Ralph Nader and many more. This interview was originally conducted by Rick Ulfik from We, The World. He interviews Dr. Rangan Chatterjee and James Maskell about the work they are doing, the future of medicine, the current state of functional medicine, and how we see medicine shifting in the rest of this century. It was a great session, and at the time we received so much feedback that people enjoyed it. The interview has not been available since the Summit ended, so we wanted to share it in this podcast.

Dr. Chatterjee is the host of the UK International Functional Forum hosted the Royal Society of Medicine. He is also the star of BBC One's "Doctor in the House" and was recently named the eighth most influential general practitioner in the UK. James is the founder of the Evolution of Medicine and the creator of the Functional Forum.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • James and Rangan's vision for transforming healthcare.
  • How "Doctor in the House" has spread to over 90 other countries.
  • What this momentum worldwide will mean for you and your practice.

This week on the podcast, the Evolution of Medicine is thrilled to welcome Mark Shapiro. Mark is host of The One and Only Podcast and the creator of Winning Weeks, an accountability program for high performing entrepreneurs.

Earlier this year, our co-founder James Maskell took Mark’s Winning Weeks program and learned a lot about what it takes to create accountability for himself and for his business. He will be sharing some of those wins on the podcast this week.

On this podcast you will learn:

  1. Why Mark chose group accountability over one-on-one coaching.
  2. How the power of the group fills the “accountability gap.”
  3. How you can take action to improve your accountability and the accountability of your patients.

Mark’s TEDx talk on social media also came out this week, and you can view it below.

One of the things that James learned last week is that he has “perfect detoxification pathways”, but not all people are so lucky. A huge topic of discussion on the upcoming Summit is MTHFR. Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase is the rate-limiting enzyme in the methyl cycle, and it is encoded by the MTHFR gene. This week we welcome Sterling Hill, the founder of MTHFRsupport.com. Sterling is an educator and having found out of her personal status and what it means for her - she has been educating others about the impact of MTHFR for years.

In anticipation of our upcoming Interpreting Your Genetics Summit, our co-founder James Maskell has decided to let you listen in on his one hour genetic interpretation session for a very special podcast episode. Delivering the interpretation is Yael Joffe, RD, PhD who keynotes during the Summit itself, leading a day of discussions on nutrigenomics.

If you have ever wondered what it would look like to be part of a team delivering “genomic medicine”, here is a look under the hood. Listen in now!

This podcast is made possible by one of our Summit sponsors DNALife. There are few reasons why we chose this test, firstly because this test can only be ordered through a practitioner ensuring that the results will get a professional, responsible interpretation. Dr. Joffe was also centrally involved in creating this test, curating only those SNPs and other data points that have enough good research data to infer real meaning.

Our hope is that this session will encourage you to attend the Summit, and take advantage of the huge opportunity for the Functional Medicine community to deliver the next era of precision medicine. If nothing else, you will see that genetic interpretation can be an empowering experience.

You might remember Evolution of Medicine co-founder James Maskell presented his TEDx talk in 2015 from Guernsey called Community, Not Medicine, Creates Health. He's heading back to Guernsey to host the event, along with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, the BBC’s "Doctor in the House". Journey to 100 will host 20 leading global healthcare, lifestyle and longevity experts, who will share their perspectives and help us all understand how we can live healthier, happier lives, from zero to 100 years old and beyond. Expect over 20 international speakers from all over the world including some past Functional Forum presenters like Dr. Janet Settle, Dr. Michael Ash, Tom Blue and Dr. Sachin Patel. Beyond progressive medicine models, there will also be talks on fascinating topics indirectly related to healthcare like sustainable farming, universal basic income and community support structures.

We believe this project has the potential to show the world how factors such as community, purpose in life,  preventative healthcare and a proactive approach to well-being could make Guernsey the first country to have an average life expectancy of 100, and to kickstart a new era in health and longevity.

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we take a look back at a very special presentation from Dr. Leo Galland from our 2014 Evolution of Medicine Summit. Our next Functional Forum is entitled the "Evolution of Primary Care", which will address the most significant way functional medicine can impact medicine as a whole... as an updated operating system for primary care.

Dr. Leo Galland is one of the fore-fathers of the functional medicine operating system. Outside of this presentation on the first Evolution of Medicine summit we have also welcomed him to the Functional Forum stage twice. Some of his important contributions to medicine are concepts like "leaky gut", "dysbiosis" and "SIBO".

But the most impactful change to the old system is the transition to patient-centered diagnoses. Medicine evolving from a doctor-centered structure to a patient-centered structure and this reflects Dr. Galland's unique contribution to the operating system.  In this podcast, Dr. Galland addresses how this new model was developed and why it's such an important part of the evolution of medicine.

On this podcast you will hear:
  • Why everyone deserves a “patient-centered diagnosis” and how it began
  • The 3 factors driving and mediating chronic disease
  • Questions you should be asking to deliver the best care

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast,  we hear from Richard Morris, CEO of Powell Metabolics. Powell Metabolics is an innovative wellness coaching program delivered in a physical therapy environment that started in Arizona and has the potential to expand across the country. This is part of a greater trend of functional medicine integrating with other "hands on" modalities like physical therapy, personal training and chiropractic. We think you'll be inspired to hear about their process, the results and how your practice could benefit.

All the way through the Functional Forum and the Evolution of Medicine we've sighted the future of "primary care" to be enhanced through technology, the Functional Medicine operating systems, and coaching for behavior change and this is such a great example. One of the powerful tools that Powell has taken advantage is Nudge Coach, a behavior change technology we love. By taking advantage of their white label solution, they have a branded experience for their patients to use to track behavior change between visits.

On this podcast you will hear:
  • #1 lesson from behavior change science relevant to any practice
  • Their unique business model and what it takes to create behavior change in a PT setting
  • How to take advantage of technology in your brick and mortar practice

Dr. Pizzorno is the founder of Bastyr University and he joins us to talk about environmental toxins. He's been on the cutting edge of this topic for several decades and we're excited to welcome to the podcast.

Dr. Pizzorno explains how you can approach treatment for those exposed to toxins, indicators of toxin exposure, and what to measure when testing for exposure. He goes into greater details in his new book: The Toxin Solution: How Hidden Poisons in the Air, Water, Food, and Products We Use Are Destroying Our Health--AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO FIX IT. This book is a culmination of the decades of research that he's done around toxins and how to avoid those you can and what to do to mitigate the effects of the ones you can't.

On this podcast you will hear:

  • what are some of the most common toxins
  • what diseases are caused by these toxins
  • lessons from Dr. Pizzornoa's extensive environmental toxin data

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we kick off our upcoming Functional Forum: Evolution of Cardiology with Dr. Steven Masley as we revisit his interview from the Evolution of Medicine Summit: Healthcare from Scratch.

Cardiology used to be the study of the heart - but in the last couple decade it's been more about the study of cardiac procedures. Not all of these procedures have long term benefits and most just treat the symptoms and do not prevent future events. Dr. Masley looks at this from a preventative and lifestyle medicine perspective and works to educate both patients and practitioners on what they can do to avoid seeing a cardiologist altogether.

On the podcast you will hear:

  • Emerging best practices for preventing heart disease
  • How to predict if you can live to 100 without disease
  • How technology can massively reduce our costs

Ready, Set, Recover: AutoResponders in Action

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we feature Marjorie Nass, Chief Wellness Officer and Heather Campbell, Chief Executive Officer of Ready Set Recover. Ready Set Recover works with your patient's friends and family, doctors and hospitals, and employers at the time of surgery to make recovery as easy as possible. Ready Set Recover is an action-oriented online program that helps surgical patients take positive steps throughout the surgical and recovery process.

Why is this program so special? If you have patients that are preparing for surgery, this is something that you can curate for your community without having to do all the work yourself. We strive to bring you resources that make your practice more efficient and effective and this program offers both. We're so excited to share this with you because this program uses email autoresponder technology. Autoresponders are messages set to go out automatically. They allow you to automate campaigns and manage one-to-one communication with your patients. This is the core technology that we focus on in the Practice Accelerator. Thousands of practitioners have shared with us that automating patient education and setting up systems that work while they are not "on the job" brings convenience and value to their patients - and bonus, it doubles as marketing. As early adopters of this new era of medicine, many practitioners are working with entrepreneurs that have identified problems and have created programs that offer scalable solutions.

In this podcast you will hear:

  • why is there a need for this type of program and how is it delivered
  • how can practitioners curate something like this for their patients
  • what is the role of programs like this for the future of medicine
  • is this something that can be made deliverable to the average patient
