In this podcast you will learn

In this episode of the podcast, Dr Rankin describes her hero's journey from medical school to "psycho-spiritual" medicine and what she has learned along the way, and the story is equally inspiring for doctors looking to rediscover their passion for medicine as it is patients looking to discover health.

Dr Rankin's Whole Health Medicine Institute starts May 19th, if you are interested in finding out more click here

In this podcast you will learn
  • The post traumatic stress disorder Dr Rankin picked up in medical school
  • Her journey to recovering herself from that place
  • How she has created a structure to help other physicians find and live their true calling

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 13: HRV Patient Engagement
Welcome back to the final podcast in this series on "The Future of Patient Compliance" where we have been documenting the technologies and strategies fueling the empowerment revolution.

Whereas most of the technologies have focused on either training systems or practice based technologies, this week we introduce our first consumer product. Having polled our community, we asked what are the technologies you use to empower the patient between visits. The answer was HeartMath.

HeartMath has been used by over 5 million people and is recommended by 25,000 health professionals around the world. Evolution of Medicine co-founder Gabe Hoffman used it successfully in his NYC practice for years.

In this episode we interview Dr. Tim Culbert a developmental and behavioral pediatrician from Minnesota who has been using the technology with great success for more than a decade.

In this podcast you will learn
  •  Why Dr Culbert brought HeartMath into his practice and the results
  • The power of Heart Rate Variability to measure good health
  • Clinical and practical best practices for getting the best results with HeartMath

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 12: Doctor Compliance

Welcome back to our popular podcast series entitled "The Future of Patient Compliance" where we document the journey from compliance to empowerment as medicine shifts from a patriarchal model that was a good fit for acute disease, to more of a nurturing, community model that is more suited to chronic disease.

One of our first sponsors on the Functional Forum was Freedom Practice Coaching, who have bemuse the biggest company in the industry for helping doctors transition to a more suitable model for chronic disease care. We have shared some of their best strategies on previous podcasts, but this week we talk about a different area of compliance.... doctor compliance.

How compliant are you with what you need to do to improve your practice? If you are asking patients to change behavior or make investments into their health, how do you comply with your own areas of weakness?

In this podcast we speak with Deborah Matthew, MD a physician leader from North Carolina who speaks openly about what it really took to build a successful practice model, from being just busy to building a profitable, efficient practice.

In this podcast you will learn
  • Why a busy practice isn't always a successful practice
  • What it took for this doctor to get out of her own way
  • The key strategies Dr. Matthew took from FPC to take her to success
Freedom Practice Coaching is excited to announce they have a new weekend program to teach practitioners their lead flow and packaging system and have them leave with a 90 day plan to implement. The Functional Forum and Evolution of Medicine community can sign up at vastly discounted rates until the end of April.

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 11: Delivering Plans

We have been thrilled at the feedback from our community from our "Future of Patient Compliance" series, where we have started the conversation about how we can shift the conversation on "compliance" to "empowerment" and see how technology can best help us to scale and automate that transition.

More than any other podcast in this series, we are thrilled to bring this interview to you. One of the main reasons for this is that the Functional Forum had a role in bringing this technology into the world. One of our goals at the Forum was to bring together technologists and Functional Medicine doctors to see how those collisions could lead to solutions for our community.

If you have been following the Forum you know about MBODY360, an app that creates a new level of engagement between patient and practitioner. In this episode you will hear from Kari Thorstensen, the creator of the app, and Dr. Vincent Pedre, Functional Medicine physician and digital innovator.

In this podcast we discuss
  • How Kari came to create the underlying technology for MBODY360
  • How MBODY360 tracks actively and passively to create real connection
  • Why MBODY360 has become a key tool in Dr Pedre's practice

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 10: Healthwave to Fullscript

If you have been following our work for the last year, you know we have been big supporters of Healthwave. As a technology platform that makes it easy to prescribe professional grade supplements with no overhead requirements and a best in category user experience, we see it as a key tool in the development of a low overhead, high value practice model.

When we started this "Future of Patient Compliance" series, marrying the shift from compliance to empowerment with the technological tools to accelerate it, Kyle Braatz, the CEO of Healthwave was our first guest on the first episode. A year later, Healthwave has undergone a transformation to Fullscript.com. As we find out in this podcast, this is more than a branding change, this represents a massive upgrade in their service, not only adding full online and offline integration of inventory, but not the availability of all product lines on the platform, making it truly brand agnostic.

In this podcast you will learn
  • Why an e-prescribe platform is a key part of any integrative micro practice
  • What was the reason for Healthwave to shift to Fullscript
  • Some of the exciting new adherence features of the new service

Leaders of the kNEW School: The Power of Listening

Our new podcast series focused on leading female physicians bringing feminine qualities to medicine continues this weekend with Dr. Tami Meraglia. "Dr Tami MD" rose to fame last year with her best selling book "The Hormone Secret" and lectures across the world on hormones, health and even bio-hacking.

What many practitioners don't know is that Dr Tami has been a keen proponent of integrative and functional medicine for many years and has built a thriving membership practice in the Seattle area. In this episode we not only looked at what she feels is the key skill to being a great doctor, listening, but also why she started a membership practice and how that practice model provides a more matriarchal framework for patient engagement.

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • The key skills practitioners have to learn to be great listeners
  • The best types of questions to ask for real engagement
  • How technology empowers her membership practice

Leader of the kNEW School: Intergenerational Inattention
We continue this exciting series "Leaders of the kNEW School" with a fresh new face for our content. Dr Tasneem Bathia (Dr Taz) is becoming an increasingly visible figure in the integrative medicine space, teaching about all aspects of modern practice to physicians across the country, as well as many TV appearances.

Her practice is focused on families, women and their children, and this gives her an interesting viewpoint of the heart of medicine. We cover some of the most innovative areas of kNEW medicine, including intergenerational epigenetics, the power of attention with tips for delivering higher quality care.

In this episode we cover:

What is the heart of medicine?

Leaders of the kNEW School: Community and Leadership in Action

It is always a great feeling when serendipity makes its way into the programming of the Evolution of Medicine. This "Leaders of the kNEW School" series had been planned for a while with the topics of female leadership, community and empowerment planned into the narrative.

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to connect with three female doctors who have been taking our structure for creating community to the next level with the vastly accelerated growth of their Orange County, CA Functional Forum meetup. Dr. Sunny Raleigh, Dr. Kelly McCann and Dr. Carrie Ganek have grown their meetup to over 100 participants and now have serious sponsors, expanding interest and we thought it would make the perfect story for this podcast series of community and leadership in action.

More than anything we hope this podcast inspires YOU to start a community of health providers in your area, wherever in the world you find yourself.

In this podcast you will learn
  • The intrinsic need for community and connection and how this meetup came to be
  • How these three doctors worked together to grow their community locally
  • Next level community: Sponsors, momentum and vulnerability

In this podcast we talk about this transition, what she has learned along the way and talk about two massive topics in the shift from patriarchal medicine to a more feminine medicine: intuition and community. Dr Romm's unique perspective is a breath of fresh air for all health professionals.

In this episode you will learn.

Leaders of the kNEW School: Feminine Medicine
Evolution of Medicine is thrilled to announce a new series of podcasts for February and March 2016 called "Leaders of the kNEW School". Over the last two years, through our Functional Forum, our two Summits and our podcast we have featured a heroic tribe of (mostly) young, passionate doctors leading medicine towards the new paradigm.

When we took a step back to examine what the common features of this new paradigm were, two things became very clear.

Firstly, through our second Summit "Healthcare from Scratch", it became clear that the current system and this new paradigm look remarkably different. Whilst the Western medical model is primarily patriarchal in nature (use of force, domination of disease, deterministic and mechanical) the common characteristics of this new paradigm (empowerment, community, nurture, intuition) are decidedly more feminine in nature.

Secondly, there is much value in the new paradigm in knowledge and understanding. How much more effective would medicine be if you..
  • kNEW you were capable of reversing your chronic disease?
  • kNEW your genetic weaknesses and strengths?
  • kNEW the predictive antibodies in your system and what that meant?
  • kNEW other people in your community with the same disease?
  • kNEW yourself so well you didn't need a doctor?
These two understandings underpin this new podcast series. We have chosen an exciting group of female physicians leading the charge towards a new paradigm in medicine. Over the coming weeks you will hear from industry leaders like Dr. Mimi Guarnieri, Dr. Aviva Romm and many more. For our first episode we speak to holistic psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan, author of upcoming book "A Mind of Your Own" and fan favorite on our Summits and Forums.

On this podcast you will learn
  • Why the paradigm shift in medicine is towards feminine medicine
  • How we predict and reverse disease before they manifest
  • The powerful role of intuition in cases of complexity

At the December 2015 Functional Forum, Holistic Nutrition Lab's Andrea Nakayama referred to 2016 as 'The Year of Empathy'. It seemed to elicit a great response from the audience and so we asked her back in the studio to expand on her thoughts.

We have been a big fan of Andrea's work for a year now, one of the major reasons being that she has created a completely scalable education program to help an unlimited number of health professionals reach mastery in the field of Functional Nutrition. It is one thing to be able to deliver great care, but to reverse engineer the process so others can follow in her footsteps consistently.

What you will learn in this podcast:
  • Why empathy is having a comeback in medicine
  • Andrea's 8 Part Framework for delivering empathy in a clinical setting
  • The role of intuition in medicine and how to develop it

Social Genomics: The Science of Community

Last August, our Functional Forum came from the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Annual International Conference in Austin TX. Of all the amazing speakers, we chose to highlight the talk of George Slavich, PhD, a researcher from UCLA’s Stress Lab.

Check out the highlights from his talk here.

His field: Social Genomics: A new area of science that looks at the correlative and causative factors behind social stress, and their effects on gene expression. The answers they are uncovering are fascinating, as are the questions those answers lead us to.

This is a must listen for any health professional passionate about ‘root cause resolution’ and opens up a new paradigm in diagnosis and treatment of chronic disease. UCLA has also developed "STRAIN", an "X-Ray for Stress" that allows you to compare patients stress objectively. Check it out here.

What you will learn in this podcast:
  • What is social genomics and what are they measuring?
  • Why the brain and the immune system are so intimately linked?
  • Social isolation vs. diet, exercise and smoking.. what’s worst?

The Paleovedic Diet
At first glance, the concepts behind 'paleo' and 'Ayurveda' might seem completely at odds. Ayurveda is all about eating vegan and 'typing' and paleo is all about dogma and eating meat, right?

Not according to, Dr. Akil Palanisamy, a Harvard trained physician and author of the new book 'The Paleovedic Diet', one that draws from the strengths of each to create something unique. By personalizing paleo concepts by type and emphasizing vegetables in a paleo framework, you can get the best of both worlds.

This diet has been particularly successful for the treating of autoimmune disease which is a particular focus for Evolution of Medicine in 2016. Dr Palanisamy is also the host of an upcoming event on Evolutionary Medicine at UCSF with other EvoMed favorites like Chris Kresser. Check it out here!

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • The rationale and proven success of the "Paleovedic Diet'
  • How much more nutrient dense a wild apple is than a 'regular apple'
  • What evolutionary medicine is and why it is important
