Evolution of Medicine Podcast (health, alternative health)
Methylation Part 2: Sustainable solutions

This week on the Evolution of Medicine Podcast, we feature Naturopathic doctor and IFM faculty member, Dr. Kara Fitzgerald. This is the 2nd of two podcasts about methylation.  Dr. Fitzgerald has just written a new book on this popular topic and any practitioner looking to help their patients most effectively will want to listen.

The “dance of methylation” extends far beyond supplementing with B12 and methylated folate. Indeed, long-term outcome studies using this approach are lacking, and research suggests caution is advised with regard to imbalanced hypermethylation. However, much can be done to safely support methylation balance.

In this podcast you will learn:

  • amazing statistic about methylation and how it affects the body
  • clinical areas in which meth might be an issue
  • sensible ways to help patients deal with methylation

Methylation Part 1: Why all the hype?
This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we feature Dr. Ben Lynch, President and CEO of seekinghealth.org.  Dr. Lynch is a Naturopathic Doctor who currently researches, writes and presents worldwide on ta range of topics.  He's passionate about teaching doctors and other practitioners about disease prevention and health promotion.

One of the buzzwords in the integrative / functional medicine space in the past few years has been methylation, so much so that whole conferences are now dedicated to it. Are you familiar with MTHFR mutations? Chances are some of your patients are. In this episode we take a dive into these new areas of medicine with Dr Lynch.

In this podcast you will learn
  • What is methylation and what do clinician need to know
  • What are the leverage points for helping your patients
  • How to get to the root cause of complicated health conditions

Physician Suicide: Do No Harm

This week we welcome back Dr. Pamela Wible.  Last year she joined us on our podcast to speak to her practice evolution from a "production line" to a "relationship medicine" practice in our Micropractice Evolution series of podcasts.  You can listen to it by clicking this link.

This week, Dr. Wible joins us to talk about the epidemic of physician suicide. She's filmed a powerful TedMed talk on the epidemic of physician suicide where she read the words of physicians on the edge of taking their own lives. As we lose more brilliant minds and healers to suicide, Dr. Wible has started a project to bring this epidemic to light. Her film called "Do No Harm" will do exactly that and she tells us more about the film and how we can support the movement.

In this podcast you will learn:

  • the genesis of Dr. Wible's Kickstarter "Do No Harm"
  • why physician suicide is a conversation that accelerates the evolution of medicine
  • what doctors and patients alike can learn from this huge issue

Update: Organize Goes to the White House
This week we bring back Jenna Arnold from Organize. A few months ago, we featured Jenna as an innovator in the organ donor industry.  She's leading the charge to solve the shortage of organ donors in the next two years by using technology to her advantage.

Last time we featured her, the Evolution of Medicine community showed support and interest that made a real difference. Thank you! We bring her back this week to share an update about Organize.  She and her team were recently at the White House to speak about their project with some important influencers from the industry.  She shares with us what she learned and what they were able to accomplish.

In this podcast you will hear:

  • updates from the White House visit
  • what to expect from Organize
  • what can we learn from this project to solve other problems

Crushing the Functional Medicine Membership Model

This week on the Evolution of Medicine podcast, we welcome back Dr. Robin Berzin.  The last time she was on the show, we featured her on the podcast New Models of Functional Medicine.  She had just opened up her membership based direct primary care Functional Medicine practice, Parsley Health, in New York.

We've brought her back because her practice is now a huge success.  She's implemented many of the things that we speak about in the 60 Day Practice Accelerator program and the Functional Forum.  James, as a member of her practice, has witnessed it firsthand.  Dr. Berzin is now opening more practices and looking for more physicians to bring on board.

If the membership model and Dr. Berzin's practice inspires you, check out the membership model course we're offering at the end of July in Salk Lake City.  It's a much more efficient way to capture the value of what you provide in Functional Medicine and it makes it much more affordable for patients.  Click here for more information.

Shocking The Masses into Behavior Change

The Evolution of Medicine often highlights rule breakers and change makers on the medical technology front.  It's why we feature tools

for practitioners to keep in touch with their clients or patients in between visits, particularly, to create behavior change.

This week we feature Maneesh Sethi, the CEO of Pavlok. Pavlok vibrates, beeps, and releases an electric stimulus that ranges from pleasant to aversive to "shock" you into behavior change.

In this podcast you will learn:

  • why wearing a device that shocks you is a good idea
  • Maneesh shares his experience on the television show, Shark Tank
  • how to effectively create behavior change

Reversing Chronic Pain and Opioid Addiction

Welcome to the Evolution of Medicine podcast.  There has been a lot of discussion, recently, of the opioid issue in America and some of the new CDC guidelines. We reached out to a reformed pain specialist for his unique perspective.

This week we feature pain management specialist, Dr. Kevin Cuccaro.  He's been on a mission to understand the causes of pain and has gone from being an anesthesiologist to an integrative medicine practitioner. He shares his pain medicine journey and what he's learned along the way.

In this podcast you will learn:

  • 4 things you need to do to help patients avoid chronic pain
  • why chronic pain is a microcosm of the macrocosm
  • how to work more effectively with pain management in your practice

Anxiety, Nutrition and a Forum from Introverts

This week, we feature food mood expert, Trudy Scott. She's a certified nutritionist and on a mission to educate and empower anxious individuals worldwide about nutritional and natural solutions for anxiety, stress, and emotional eating.

She came to our recent Functional Forum in San Francisco and afterwards approached us with some great ideas about how we can make the Functional Forum more approachable for those with social anxiety.  If you've seen the forum, you know that Gabe and James are not introverted by any stretch of the imagination, so, it was great to learn from the experience of others.

In this podcast you will learn:

  • why introversion is a nutrition deficiency and not a personality type
  • how to become a better networker, speaker and practitioner by understanding the social anxiety of others
  • how to start a Functional Forum meetup and make it a great experience for introverts

Cancer vs. The Therapeutic Order
For more than a decade, Naturopathic Doctor News and Review (NDNR) has been a central education platform for the naturopathic profession, both in print and online. Back in 2011-2013, our founder, James Maskell, wrote a practice development column for the platform.

This week NDNR.com launched its first Online Summit on Cancer Prevention and we couldn't be more excited to partner with them. If we truly want to be successful in cancer prevention, some of the underlying foundations of Naturopathic Medicine, like the "Therapeutic Order" are a key part of an optimal plan. We welcome their founder and publisher Razi Berry for a great discussion relevant to any practitioner in integrative, functional or naturopathic medicine... or what we like to call the "kNEW medicine".

What you will learn in this episode you will learn:

- The therapeutic order and its role the future of medicine
- Cancer prevention and where our leverage is in health creation
- Highlights from the current summit

  • how your childhood biography becomes your adult biology
  • what functional medicine practitioners can to do become ACE aware

Anatomy of a Calling
Ever since we saw her first TEDx talk, we have been huge fans of Dr. Lissa Rankin here at the Evolution of Medicine. Her story is such great example of the vision we have for changing medicine. She is the author of two best selling books, Mind Over Medicine and her recent "Anatomy of a Calling" where she describes the hero's journey necessary for anyone to follow their calling in life.

In this episode of the podcast, Dr Rankin describes her hero's journey from medical school to "psycho-spiritual" medicine and what she has learned along the way, and the story is equally inspiring for doctors looking to rediscover their passion for medicine as it is patients looking to discover health.

Dr Rankin's Whole Health Medicine Institute starts May 19th, if you are interested in finding out more click here

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 13: HRV Patient Engagement
Welcome back to the final podcast in this series on "The Future of Patient Compliance" where we have been documenting the technologies and strategies fueling the empowerment revolution.

Whereas most of the technologies have focused on either training systems or practice based technologies, this week we introduce our first consumer product. Having polled our community, we asked what are the technologies you use to empower the patient between visits. The answer was HeartMath.

HeartMath has been used by over 5 million people and is recommended by 25,000 health professionals around the world. Evolution of Medicine co-founder Gabe Hoffman used it successfully in his NYC practice for years.

In this episode we interview Dr. Tim Culbert a developmental and behavioral pediatrician from Minnesota who has been using the technology with great success for more than a decade.

In this podcast you will learn
  •  Why Dr Culbert brought HeartMath into his practice and the results
  • The power of Heart Rate Variability to measure good health
  • Clinical and practical best practices for getting the best results with HeartMath

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 12: Doctor Compliance

Welcome back to our popular podcast series entitled "The Future of Patient Compliance" where we document the journey from compliance to empowerment as medicine shifts from a patriarchal model that was a good fit for acute disease, to more of a nurturing, community model that is more suited to chronic disease.

One of our first sponsors on the Functional Forum was Freedom Practice Coaching, who have bemuse the biggest company in the industry for helping doctors transition to a more suitable model for chronic disease care. We have shared some of their best strategies on previous podcasts, but this week we talk about a different area of compliance.... doctor compliance.

How compliant are you with what you need to do to improve your practice? If you are asking patients to change behavior or make investments into their health, how do you comply with your own areas of weakness?

In this podcast we speak with Deborah Matthew, MD a physician leader from North Carolina who speaks openly about what it really took to build a successful practice model, from being just busy to building a profitable, efficient practice.

In this podcast you will learn
  • Why a busy practice isn't always a successful practice
  • What it took for this doctor to get out of her own way
  • The key strategies Dr. Matthew took from FPC to take her to success
Freedom Practice Coaching is excited to announce they have a new weekend program to teach practitioners their lead flow and packaging system and have them leave with a 90 day plan to implement. The Functional Forum and Evolution of Medicine community can sign up at vastly discounted rates until the end of April.

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 11: Delivering Plans

We have been thrilled at the feedback from our community from our "Future of Patient Compliance" series, where we have started the conversation about how we can shift the conversation on "compliance" to "empowerment" and see how technology can best help us to scale and automate that transition.

More than any other podcast in this series, we are thrilled to bring this interview to you. One of the main reasons for this is that the Functional Forum had a role in bringing this technology into the world. One of our goals at the Forum was to bring together technologists and Functional Medicine doctors to see how those collisions could lead to solutions for our community.

If you have been following the Forum you know about MBODY360, an app that creates a new level of engagement between patient and practitioner. In this episode you will hear from Kari Thorstensen, the creator of the app, and Dr. Vincent Pedre, Functional Medicine physician and digital innovator.

In this podcast we discuss
  • How Kari came to create the underlying technology for MBODY360
  • How MBODY360 tracks actively and passively to create real connection
  • Why MBODY360 has become a key tool in Dr Pedre's practice

Future of Patient Compliance: Part 10: Healthwave to Fullscript
Future of Patient Compliance: Part 10: Healthwave to Fullscript

If you have been following our work for the last year, you know we have been big supporters of Healthwave. As a technology platform that makes it easy to prescribe professional grade supplements with no overhead requirements and a best in category user experience, we see it as a key tool in the development of a low overhead, high value practice model.

When we started this "Future of Patient Compliance" series, marrying the shift from compliance to empowerment with the technological tools to accelerate it, Kyle Braatz, the CEO of Healthwave was our first guest on the first episode. A year later, Healthwave has undergone a transformation to Fullscript.com. As we find out in this podcast, this is more than a branding change, this represents a massive upgrade in their service, not only adding full online and offline integration of inventory, but not the availability of all product lines on the platform, making it truly brand agnostic.

In this podcast you will learn
  • Why an e-prescribe platform is a key part of any integrative micro practice
  • What was the reason for Healthwave to shift to Fullscript
  • Some of the exciting new adherence features of the new service

Leaders of the kNEW School: Community and Leadership in Action

It is always a great feeling when serendipity makes its way into the programming of the Evolution of Medicine. This "Leaders of the kNEW School" series had been planned for a while with the topics of female leadership, community and empowerment planned into the narrative.

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to connect with three female doctors who have been taking our structure for creating community to the next level with the vastly accelerated growth of their Orange County, CA Functional Forum meetup. Dr. Sunny Raleigh, Dr. Kelly McCann and Dr. Carrie Ganek have grown their meetup to over 100 participants and now have serious sponsors, expanding interest and we thought it would make the perfect story for this podcast series of community and leadership in action.

More than anything we hope this podcast inspires YOU to start a community of health providers in your area, wherever in the world you find yourself.

In this podcast you will learn
  • The intrinsic need for community and connection and how this meetup came to be
  • How these three doctors worked together to grow their community locally

Leaders of the kNEW School: Feminine Medicine
Evolution of Medicine is thrilled to announce a new series of podcasts for February and March 2016 called "Leaders of the kNEW School". Over the last two years, through our Functional Forum, our two Summits and our podcast we have featured a heroic tribe of (mostly) young, passionate doctors leading medicine towards the new paradigm.

When we took a step back to examine what the common features of this new paradigm were, two things became very clear.

Firstly, through our second Summit "Healthcare from Scratch", it became clear that the current system and this new paradigm look remarkably different. Whilst the Western medical model is primarily patriarchal in nature (use of force, domination of disease, deterministic and mechanical) the common characteristics of this new paradigm (empowerment, community, nurture, intuition) are decidedly more feminine in nature.

Secondly, there is much value in the new paradigm in knowledge and understanding. How much more effective would medicine be if you..
  • kNEW you were capable of reversing your chronic disease?
  • kNEW your genetic weaknesses and strengths?
  • kNEW the predictive antibodies in your system and what that meant?
  • kNEW other people in your community with the same disease?
  • kNEW yourself so well you didn't need a doctor?
These two understandings underpin this new podcast series. We have chosen an exciting group of female physicians leading the charge towards a new paradigm in medicine. Over the coming weeks you will hear from industry leaders like Dr. Mimi Guarnieri, Dr. Aviva Romm and many more. For our first episode we speak to holistic psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan, author of upcoming book "A Mind of Your Own" and fan favorite on our Summits and Forums.

On this podcast you will learn
  • Why the paradigm shift in medicine is towards feminine medicine
  • How we predict and reverse disease before they manifest
  • The powerful role of intuition in cases of complexity

At the December 2015 Functional Forum, Holistic Nutrition Lab's Andrea Nakayama referred to 2016 as 'The Year of Empathy'. It seemed to elicit a great response from the audience and so we asked her back in the studio to expand on her thoughts.

We have been a big fan of Andrea's work for a year now, one of the major reasons being that she has created a completely scalable education program to help an unlimited number of health professionals reach mastery in the field of Functional Nutrition. It is one thing to be able to deliver great care, but to reverse engineer the process so others can follow in her footsteps consistently.

What you will learn in this podcast:
  • Why empathy is having a comeback in medicine
  • Andrea's 8 Part Framework for delivering empathy in a clinical setting
  • The role of intuition in medicine and how to develop it

Social Genomics: The Science of Community

Last August, our Functional Forum came from the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Annual International Conference in Austin TX. Of all the amazing speakers, we chose to highlight the talk of George Slavich, PhD, a researcher from UCLA’s Stress Lab.

Check out the highlights from his talk here.

His field: Social Genomics: A new area of science that looks at the correlative and causative factors behind social stress, and their effects on gene expression. The answers they are uncovering are fascinating, as are the questions those answers lead us to.

This is a must listen for any health professional passionate about ‘root cause resolution’ and opens up a new paradigm in diagnosis and treatment of chronic disease. UCLA has also developed "STRAIN", an "X-Ray for Stress" that allows you to compare patients stress objectively. Check it out here.

What you will learn in this podcast:
  • What is social genomics and what are they measuring?
  • Why the brain and the immune system are so intimately linked?
  • Social isolation vs. diet, exercise and smoking.. what’s worst?

The Paleovedic Diet
At first glance, the concepts behind 'paleo' and 'Ayurveda' might seem completely at odds. Ayurveda is all about eating vegan and 'typing' and paleo is all about dogma and eating meat, right?

Not according to, Dr. Akil Palanisamy, a Harvard trained physician and author of the new book 'The Paleovedic Diet', one that draws from the strengths of each to create something unique. By personalizing paleo concepts by type and emphasizing vegetables in a paleo framework, you can get the best of both worlds.

This diet has been particularly successful for the treating of autoimmune disease which is a particular focus for Evolution of Medicine in 2016. Dr Palanisamy is also the host of an upcoming event on Evolutionary Medicine at UCSF with other EvoMed favorites like Chris Kresser. Check it out here!

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • The rationale and proven success of the "Paleovedic Diet'
  • How much more nutrient dense a wild apple is than a 'regular apple'
  • What evolutionary medicine is and why it is important

2016 Gameplan: Doctor to Entrepreneur?

If you have been following the Functional Forum for a while you know that we recommend Freedom Practice Coaching for practitioners looking for a high touch coaching relationship. You would have heard Matt Lowman on the podcast a few times and twice on the Functional Forum.

It is Matt's partner, Dr. Charlie Webb, who actually built the model practice that FPC trains practitioners in. We had a chance to visit his practice last year and have also been featured in the same conferences as Dr. Webb this year and found his message inspiring.

If you are on the fence about whether or not to 'go big' and make 2016 the year you transform your practice, you will find Dr Webb's message inspiring and empowering.

In this podcast you will learn

- The mindset and assets required to build a strong practice in 2016
- 'Presidential Marketing' - what it is and how to do it effectively

"What I Learned from Speaking to 1000 Doctors"
What you might not know about the Evolution of Medicine and the Functional Forum is the origin story. How did we learn about the needs of doctors to create this vibrant community?

From 2007-2010, CEO, James Maskell had the opportunity to meet thousands of doctors and health practitioners during his role as a sales rep for a supplement company. This experience proved invaluable for creating the Functional Forum.

Fast forward to 2015, where we launched the Evolution of Medicine company, and one of the first things we created was the Evolution of Medicine concierge program, a 30 minute free session for doctors and practitioners interested in building their own integrative micropractice. (you can still book a session now)

Our co-founder, Gabe Hoffman, has been running the concierge program for the whole year, speaking to over a thousand practitioners. In this podcast he wraps up what he has learned from this experience. This should be required listening for any practitioner looking to build a successful practice.

What you will learn from this podcast:
  • The common thread of 99% of all the practitioners
  • Why the large wellness center is a dangerous vision
  • Common pitfalls that practitioners fall into

#8 Best Of 2015- The Micropractice Evolution: Ideal Medical Care

Dr. Pamela Wible is one of the leading voices for the shift from production based medicine to relationship based medicine. We were first introduced to Dr Wible at the Heal Thy Practice Conference in Long Beach, CA, where she was interviewing doctors about their experience in production based medicine.

The story of how she decided what her Eugene, OR practice would look like is an incredible addition to our Micropractice Evolution series and shows off the massive value of a patient centric medical model.

In the last few years, she has gained much recognition (and a spot in this years TEDMED roster) for speaking about a taboo subject in medical circles... Physician Suicide. In this podcast Dr Wible shares some incredibly sad statistics on just how many people this affects and some of the never-spoken-of causes. This has lead to multiple TED talks and media opportunities, and we support Dr Wible 100% in her quest to bring light to these shadows!

In this podcast you will learn

  • The shocking statistics of physician suicide in America. How many doctors and how many patients affected?
  • What are some of the underlying causes of this epidemic
  • How ideal medical care, and micropractices, can solve this issue

#7 Best Of 2015- Functional Corporate Wellness: $bn Opportunity

This week's podcast one of the most important messages we have ever put out through this medium. Our vision for creating a vastly more effective health system is to empower 100,000 integrative micropractices focused on root cause resolution and community health. That might seem awfully far away at first glance, but many forces are converging to accelerate this reality, and one of them is corporate wellness.

Want new patients? Lower overhead? Cash over insurance? All this is possible when you contract directly with businesses.

America is unique in it's system of having businesses pay majority of the the health care insurance of their employees. The reasons date back to the great depression when there were wage freezes and businesses competed for talent via these types of perks. Once it was written into the tax code in the 1950s, it took off. Now, it has the potential to be the driving force behind your work, and your practice, being more valuable than ever.

Check out this 2 minute clip from our February Forum where I asked Tom Blue, Chief Strategy Officer of the AAPP, about the opportunity for functional and holistic providers to take advantage of working directly with businesses.

Businesses need to cut costs. Businesses know how to cut costs. They likely know the costs of each one of their employees. More and more of them are self insuring and looking for innovative ways to reduce the long term costs of chronic disease management. You are the answer to their problem, you just need to connect the dots. This week's webinar will help that process.

We have brought in Pedram Shojai, founder of Well.org to help us navigate the tricky terrain of corporate wellness. Pedram is not only a Oriental Medical Doctor by profession, but is also contracted with over 2200 companies looking for the services you provide, and is ready to empower you to engage the companies in your area. This week's podcast gives a great overview of the potential, and we have created a special event on Monday with a lot more information. Save the date!

Please join us this Monday, April 20th at 8pm EST, for a special webinar on how to attract and retain corporate business in your clinic.

  • How Pedram got involved with corporate wellness
  • Why now is such a hot time for business and wellness providers

#6 Best Of 2015 - The Future of Patient Compliance: Part 1

Here at the Evolution of Medicine our goal is to help to create structures that are capable of dealing with the modern epidemics of lifestyle driven chronic disease. Central to this shift is a movement from a patriarchal "Doctor Centric" model to more of an empowerment "Patient Centric" model. How can we create structures and systems that accelerate this movement? That is the purpose of this podcast series.

If you have been following our work for a while, you know that our co-founder, Gabriel Hoffman, is passionate about this topic, and has spoken on it at the Functional Forum, Evolution of Medicine Summit and more. Gabe has been a health coach for 10 years and in this series we marry the power of coaching to inspire behavior change with the power of technologies to scale and systemize these empowerment structures.

KyleBraatz-ff-guest-main

Each week our two co-founders, Gabe Hoffman and James Maskell, will lead a discussion on this crucial topic with CEOs of some of the most technologies tools that we have seen to accelerate the Evolution of Medicine. For our first podcast, we feature Healthwave CEO Kyle Braatz.

In this podcast you will learn

  • Gabe's simple three step strategy to engage patients into their process
  • The abysmal adherence of the current model for supplement prescribing
  • How Healthwave makes it easy for patients to be "compliant"
  • The different stages of building practices and how Healthwave empowers that growth

#5 Best Of 2015- IHPC Part 1: How Integrative Medicine Won

At the very first Functional Forum in February 2014, the first thing that Founder and Host James Maskell gave the rallying cry ‘we need to start acting like we are winning, and stop acting like we are losing’. This simple concept gave the Forum the momentum and energy it needed to become the world’s largest integrative medicine conference.

One of our favorite talks at the AIHM Annual Conference in San Diego this year was cut from the same cloth. John Weeks, with a career spanning over two decades supporting this emerging field, gave an incredible talk called “Connective Tissue: How Integrative Medicine Won” giving a 50 year history of the integrative medicine movement and sharing the people, strategies and timelines that moved integrative medicine to mainstream acceptance.

This is must listen material for every integrative medicine professional, not only cataloging the past but also energizing the future of the movement, in a way that is 100% congruent with the mission and goals of the Evolution of Medicine.

What you will learn in this podcast

  • How and why the movement was born  in the sixties
  • The three major eras of development from 1980 to today
  • Why the health professional of the future will be a change agent

#4 Best Of 2015- BBC PrimeTime: "Doctor in the House"

Complexity In Medicine

One of the basics premises in Functional Medicine is systems biology. This helps providers and patients to look at the body for what it is: a complex, interconnected system. But complex medicine doesn't have to be complicated, and we are excited to feature speakers who make it easy for doctors to understand this transition from reductionism to complexity.

Dr. Bill Sutherland is a fascinating Canadian doctor whose book "Grand Rounds: Healing Wisdom for a Complex World" caught our attention at the Evolution of Medicine. In this podcast he shares with us his incredible journey from jazz to medicine, through family, martial arts, world travel and depression.

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • Why we have to treat complex things in a complex way
  • Different ways to address complex situations from ADD to Cancer
  • The greater context of the role of the physician in creating health

The Future of Patient Compliance: Episode 7

Over 70% of medical decisions start with a blood draw, and that makes it arguably the most important factor for the future of precision medicine. But how efficient is lab testing? Especially the use of specialty labs?

Throughout this series, we are looking at health technologies that have the potential to massively increase the efficiency of functional, integrative, and precision medicine.

In this episode we interview Dr. Shaiv Kapadia, a practicing cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer of IGGBO, which has been described as the 'Uber for Phlebotomists'. With one in three blood draws never completed, this technology is helping solve a huge bottleneck in healthcare.

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • Why 1/3 of blood draws aren't completed and what problems this leads to for their health
  • How IGGBO democratizes access to patient for specialized lab tests
  • Why improving the 'compliance' of blood draws is a key factor in driving behavior change

The Future of Patient Compliance: Part 8

Every practitioner doing integrative, functional, holistic or naturopathic medicine (what we like to call "Root Cause Resolution") make some sort of dietary recommendations for their client as diet is a major cause of chronic disease and a modifiable part of health.

Unlike taking supplements of drugs, food habits go beyond "remembering to take things" but include organization, time management, shopping habits and more. Some providers are using health coaches, but there are emerging technologies that can scale the potential impact of providers at even lower cost.

Enter BodySite and their CEO John Cummings, a technology to empower patients with diet and lifestyle changes between office visits.

What you will learn in this podcast

  • Why behavior change is tougher for food than lifestyle or supplements
  • How to create more touch points for patients between visits
  • The way BodySite scales this process to deliver massive efficiency gains

The Future of Patient Compliance: Part 6

Throughout this series we have been looking at a new paradigm of patient compliance, one focused on empowering patients towards their best heath. Technologies are arriving that not only create scale, but also reduce overhead.

One of the biggest truths right now is that the demand for Functional Medicine is out stripping the supply and there are many patients that are not within 25 miles of an effective provider.

Telemedicine is a technology that is changing g the game for Functional practices making it easier for them to serve patients, business and groups. In this podcast we hear from Andy O'Hara, CEO of Chiron telemedicine, and look at the role telemedicine can play in scaling functional medicine.

What you will learn

  • The most important value proposition of telemedicine
  • What doctors doing phone follow ups are missing out on
  • How the right telemedicine platform can help you create a great user experience with low overhead

The Future of Patient Compliance: Part 5

Earlier in the year we created a series of four podcast document on the key transitions that we see are needed in the paradigm shift medicine is undergoing to get on top of chronic disease.

One of these key transitions is the shift from compliance, a patriarchal concept where the patient plays a passive role in their health, to empowerment, where the patient is an active participant.

Catalyzing this shift are technologies that help to automate and scale the way in which we engage and empower patients. In this first part of the second half of this series we speak to Dr. Priya Kamani and MD turned technologist who is equally passionate about this paradigm shift and has designed a technology to visualize and automate key parts of the functional medicine intake process.

In this podcast you will learn

  • The "4 Key Factors to Empowerment" Dr Kamani learned from her previous company
  • How LivingMatrix radically increases patient engagement and adherence
  • How LivingMatrix can form the backbone of a system to track outcomes and prove Functional Medicine

The Politics of the Evolution of Medicine

To warm up for next week's Evolution of Medicine Summit, this week on the podcast we connect with Alliance for Natural Health's Executive Director Gretchen DuBeau.

Those people in the USA that choose to live a healthy lifestyle, working actively to prevent and / or reverse chronic disease can sometimes take for granted the freedom to do so. We only have to look at Europe to see that this is not a given, and fortunately we have organizations like ANH working on our behalf to preserve our freedom of health choice.

In order to bring about the changes we would like to see in medicine, freedom of choice is a bedrock, but we need to continue to work together on retaining those freedoms.

In this podcast you will learn

  • What the Alliance For Natural Health is doing every day to maintain our health freedoms
  • The attacks on our health freedoms and where they come from
  • How we can work together with organizations like ANH to bring about real change to medicine

Evolution of Pediatrics

As we look forward to the 2015 Evolution of Medicine Summit, we are excited to bring you some of the best presentations from 2014 to whet your appetite.

Dr. Lawrence Palevsky is a board certified pediatrician in NY and has been on the forefront of educating both parents and practitioners about holistic pediatrics. Given that we are in the midst of the most rapid rise in chronic pediatric illness in human history, this couldn't be more timely.

Please enjoy the wisdom of one of our favorite educators as he takes you though the state of play in pediatrics and how we can evolve our understanding of the causes of chronic pediatric illness to prevent and recover children.

In this episode you will learn

  • Why pediatrics is so slow to evolve
  • The common causes of chronic pediatric illness
  • Best strategies to maintain and regain the health of a sick child

Evolution of Medicine Film Festival

One of our major goals at the Evolution of Medicine and the Functional Forum is to help you build a strong community of engaged, healthy patients around your integrative practice. Back in 2013 I wrote an article for NDNR sharing a cutting edge marketing strategy used by Dr. Jeffrey Gladd to get 60 new patients in one night.

Since then, a number of practices have recreated the success of Dr. Gladd, using the power of movies to move prospective patients into their practice. It is only becoming easier and easier to pull off these events, due to technologies like Tugg that make it easy to schedule and market a movie screening.

Later this fall, we hope to inspire 500 practitioners and meetup groups to do a film screening during the same week and create a remarkable moment in this movement. Do you want to be one of those?

The movie we are recommending is "Escape Fire", as it is the film Dr. Gladd used and has been the most consistent movie for converting new patients. In this week's podcast we interview Jillian Burne, one of our most consistent attendees of our NYC Forum, about her experience doing a movie screening this Summer. Although she used a different film, the lessons she learned are invaluable to anyone looking to replicate this system.

The Micropractice Evolution: Telemedicine

One of the biggest reasons why micropractices can be the future of primary care is that the need for physical office space is rapidly reducing due to the rise of telemedicine. With more and more insurance companies and doctors seeing the value of this approach, how do you know what are the best technologies to help you develop your telemedicine practice?

Once again, we defer to micropractice innovator and technologist Chris Kresser. Not only is he a sought after educator on the clinical side of Functional Medicine, but Chris is also an early adopter to telemedicine and technology. In this podcast he talks about his clinics evolution from Skype to more robust platforms and discusses the practicalities of practicing telemedicine.

In this podcast you will learn

  • Why telelmedicine is such a great fit for Functional Medicine
  • Chris' evolution from Skype to Zoom to Chiron
  • What to look for in a telemedicine provider

We are adding Chiron to the list of technologies we think empower a successful functional medicine practice. For more information click the link below to visit his website!

The Micropractice Evolution: Functional on Insurance

Once we started talking about integrative micropractices on the Functional Forum, we started to hear from all sorts of doctors who had built their own practices, innovating on the model. Dr. Evan Hirsch is one doctor, who build his practice in Washington State mainly on insurance, which is pretty tough to do. Dr. Hirsch has since added some cash services but his practices may hold some key parts of a successful practice model for those doctors not looking to go all cash.

In this podcast you will learn

  • Dr. Hirsch's story of building a successful practice (via a micropractice model)
  • The codes that Dr Hirsch uses to bill his time and services with insurance

The Micropractice Evolution: H.O.M.E.

In May 2014, one of our favorite physicians Dr. Jeffrey Gladd came onto the Functional Forum to share his thoughts on what we were then calling "Integrative Medicine 2.0". Dr. Gladd has built a successful practice in rural Indiana. How could doctors use technology to deliver better integrative medicine?

One weekend before that talk, Dr. Gladd had a 'moment of clarity' and his talk on the Functional Forum started with Integrative Medicine 2.0, but ended with his vision for H.O.M.E. (Heirloom Organic Micropractices focused on Empowerment) You can see the video of his talk below.

During the talk, Dr. Gladd asked what medicine would look like if there was an integrative micropractice for every farmers market in America? That question sat very deeply with us at the Forum and lead to our vision for changing healthcare.

100,000 integrative medical practices focused on root cause resolution and community health.

Since we shared that vision, many other doctors have got in touch to share their innovative micropractice model, leading to this podcast series. In this first episode we hear from Dr. Gladd from his talk from the 2014 Evolution of Medicine Summit, that was recorded that same weekend.

In this podcast you will learn

  • What doctors are afraid of and how to move past fear and build your dream practice
  • The H.O.M.E. model and how it can empower change
  • Dr. Gladd's other awesome innovations that have empowered great health

MindBody ToolKit

Zoobiquity: What can we learn from vets?

Dr. Richard Palmquist is on the top holistic veterinarians in the country, not only building a significant t practice in Los Angeles, CA but also leading areas of research and academia.

We recorded this podcast back in April in LA, and he gave me a book called 'Zoobiquity' by Dr. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz. This book is incredible, showing the massive value of collaboration between doctors and vets.

In this podcast we look at this exact topic, looking at the value that can be added to doctors, vet and most importantly their patients by learning from each other.

This is exactly the reason why we have initiated the Functional Forum meetups (link to functionalforum.com/meetup) to create the space and community where practitioners can learn from each other.

What you will learn from the podcast

  • what doctors can learn from vets to improve patient care
  • what shopping supermarket isles can tell us about what people want
  • the differences between treating and healing, and implications for root cause resolution

The Future of Patient Compliance: Part 4

Here at the Evolution of Medicine our goal is to help to create structures that are capable of dealing with the modern epidemics of lifestyle driven chronic disease. Central to this shift is a movement from a patriarchal “Doctor Centric” model to more of an empowerment “Patient Centric” model. How can we create structures and systems that accelerate this movement? That is the purpose of this podcast series.

In our first episode in the series we spoke to Healthwave CEO Kyle Braatz and in the second episode we spoke to Freedom Practice Coaching CEO Matt Lowman, two companies whose technologies can drive and systematize effortless patient empowerment. In the third episode Andrea Nakayama, Founder of Holistic Nutrition Lab gave us her insights to the heart of an effective coaching framework.

We could not finish this series without hearing from Mette Dyhrberg of Mymee, as we are massive fans of her technology and patient empowerment is core focus of it.

In this podcast you will learn

  • How Mymee empowers a new level of relationship with all your patients and clients
  • Why a food diary is outdated in the real time world, especially when it comes to coaching change
  • How to maximize patient empowerment and speed new referrals from a technology
  • What Batman and Superman have to do with the Evolution of Medicine

The Future of Patient Compliance: Part 2

Here at the Evolution of Medicine our goal is to help to create structures that are capable of dealing with the modern epidemics of lifestyle driven chronic disease. Central to this shift is a movement from a patriarchal "Doctor Centric" model to more of an empowerment "Patient Centric" model. How can we create structures and systems that accelerate this movement? That is the purpose of this podcast series.

In our first episode in the series, we spoke to Healthwave CEO Kyle Braatz who shared some amazing statistics about "adherence" and how their technology can support that work. In this second episode we talk to Freedom Practice Coaching CEO Matt Lowman, a company designed to help any doctor or health professional build a successful functional medicine practice. Some of the systems they teach in their coaching program have a massive impact on "compliance" and empowerment, and it made so much sense to feature Matt as part of this series.

In this podcast you will learn

  • The powerful very personal story that fired up Matt about patients needing to 'have skin in the game'
  • Why front-loading costs on the first appointment is a big barrier to entry (and what to do about it!)
  • Why selling patients on every appointment wears on the psyche of the practitioner

Vitamin D, Calcium and Root Cause Resolution

This week's podcast we bring in a nutrition rebel, Dr. Garrett Smith, to talk about some of his work in clinical nutrition. Dr. Smith is a Naturopathic physician practicing in Arizona with an interesting guiding principle.

"There is only one guiding principle in the philosophy of my practice. Many know it as the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” While this can be expanded in many ways, in my judgment everything eventually returns to this one concept. If I were the patient, I would want to be fully informed of all of my options, be educated as to why certain treatment approaches are preferable in my situation, understand fully what is being asked of me, and if necessary directed towards places and people where I can obtain necessary items and services for my recovery. My ultimate goal is to help patients get better and stay that way, regardless of treatment modality. That is what I would want, that is what I do my best to provide for my patients.”

In this podcast you will learn

  • The intricate relationship between Vitamin D and other essential nutrients
  • How hair mineral analysis guides his practice
  • Other clinical pearls in the goal of root cause resolution

Active Tracking for Behavior Change

We first came across Mette and her app Mymee in 2012 at Heal Thy Practice Conference in Long Beach, and we have been following it ever since. Mette is a regular at the Functional Forum in NYC and we are excited to bring you all her active tracking app to you. The concept is "Data Driven Coaching" and we couldn't be more excited about it.

MetteDyhrberg-ff-guest-main

Mymee is unique in that it is the only active tracking app that is designed for use between a patient and practitioner. Imagine instead of recommending your patients a food diary and then waiting 30 days to see if they filled it out, you could see what your patients were eating, whether they were being compliant with their supplements in real time? That is the promise of Mymee and we think it is going to be a game changer. If you want to try out the technology, please visit her website.

This is part two of "tracking week", make sure to check out "Passive Tracking from the Front Lines: Oil Riggers."

In this podcast you will learn

  • Why active tracking is best for empowering behavior change How this would best work in a Functional Medicine practice The implications of this data (or lack of data) for your practice model

Passive Tracking from the Front Lines: Oil Riggers

Welcome to a podcast that is so powerful, it might cause your head to explode with excitement! We welcome onto the podcast Tyler Lafleur and Blake Bourque, two Louisianians on the cutting edge of the interaction between digital health and functional medicine. Blake is the CEO of Trinity Health, and Tyler is a nurse, Functional Medicine practitioner and President of Belle Diagnostics, and whats more they are offering an opportunity to work with your practice!

Blake and Tyler have a remarkable story to tell, one that shows that even the most unhealthy lifestyles can be empowered to change with the latest in digital technology. Blake and Tyler work with oil riggers, those well paid, strong men than run oil rigs. The are know for being very unhealthy, smoking and eating junk food. They are also so valuable to their employers that they are amongst the first people in the world to have 24 hour remote tracking of their vital signs. The good news is, as this technology gets cheaper and more widely available (think AppleWatch) that this could be a huge driver of behavior change.

This is part of our our two part series on tracking, please also see our podcast on Active Tracking with Mette Dhyrberg.

On this extremely enlightening and encouraging podcast we learned

  • Why their companies got involved in wireless diagnostics
  • The behavioral changes that arise from tracking unhealthy people
  • The incredible implication for Functional Medicine

Structure Leads to Function

Dr. Laura Brayton has been one of the most consistent supporters of the Functional Forum since even before its inception. Back in 2012, when we started doing practitioner meetups in NYC, Dr. Brayton has always showed up and added value to her colleagues. As a Chiropractor and Nutritionist, she has built a hugely successful practice in Hoboken, NJ serving the entire family, focused on mothers and children.

Her passion for serving this community has recently taken her work to a whole new level with an upcoming book and podcast called "Well Adjusted Mama" which we are already a huge fan of. In this episode we talk "Structure Leads To Function" one of the tenets of Functional Medicine and also of the Chiropractic profession. Dr. Brayton matches a wealth of clinical knowledge to a history of building a very successful local practice, with tons of value for anyone taking time to listen!

In this podcast you will learn

  • Why structure and function are so 'aligned'
  • Why DCs are uniquely positioned to deliver Functional Medicine

Healthy Gut

Colon Hydrotherapy: Valuable to your Clinic?

This week we are excited to hear from two doctors who have been on the cutting edge of integrative medicine for a combined 80+ years. This is "Colon Hydrotherapy Week" and we look at both the science (both recent and ancient!) behind colon hydrotherapy, but also the practical value of adding this modality into your practice.

First off, Dr. Stephen Holt, who literally wrote the book. Initially trained as an Internal Medicine doctor and Gastoentorologist, Dr. Holt was also doing research on the gut microbiome decades before the Human Microbiome Project came out. He wrote the "Definitive Guide to Colon Hydrotherapy" in 2013 and is a passionate advocate for its ongoing use in optimal patient care.

What you will learn

  • The effect of Colon Hydrotherapy on the GI system, especially the microbiome
  • The drug category that took Colon Hydrotherapy out of fashion (and the Merck Manual)
  • Best practices for getting the most out of colon hydrotherapy

We also feature experienced Naturopath and Chiropractor Dr. Russell Kolbo, who has been practicing Colon Hydrotherapy for 44+ years in his clinic in Washington State. We had a very broad discussion on the value of this modality in a modern practice. We discuss the emerging understanding of the microbiome and how the naturopathic community was way ahead of the curve when it comes to understanding its role in regulation of health.

We also talked about some of the practical aspects of running Colon Hydrotherapy in your practice. You can find out more about Dr. Kolbo's practice and work at his website

Competition vs Collaboration Medicine?

We are really excited to welcome back our most popular podcast and Functional Forum guest Matt Lowman from Freedom Practice Coaching, along with co-founder Gabe Hoffman. We answer a question that comes up all the time for doctors doing integrative medicine... who is the competition?

The answers we gave we probably not what you are expecting. The potential for collaboration to build community health is huge, but we have to get over some long held beliefs to take advantage of it. Like my friend JJ Virgin says 'The Rising Tide Floats All Boats."

Matt Lowman

In this podcast you will hear some of the practical advantages of working with other likeminded physicians (like reduce the costs of acquiring new patients) and learn about the benefits to starting a Functional Forum local meetup.

Three things you will learn from this podcast

  • Who is your real competition? The doctor down the street?
  • How do you build a collaborative community in your area
  • Why vulnerability with other providers leads to better results

Auto-Brewery Syndrome

This month at the Functional Forum we are focused on germs of all varieties, particularly the new science that is shifting our perspective on how we relate to our those 'critters' that live on, in and around us all the time. One fascinating example of symptoms that occur when this balance is off is "auto-brewery syndrome".

This syndrome refers to cases where the patient seems intoxicated (and can even fail a breathalyzer) without drinking any alcohol, as the alcohol is being made internally. Although extreme cases are not that common, there is growing evidence that the underlying issues affect many more people in a range of ways.

This week on the podcast, we are joined by Dr. Anup Kanodia, from Ohio. Not only is he one of the leading experts in this condition, but also through the lens of functional medicine he has developed successful protocols for reversing and treating this complex issue.

Anup Kanodia, MD

In this podcast you will learn

New Models in Functional Medicine

Episode #23

New Model Week: Functional Medicine

Back in September, Dr. Robin Berzin was a keynote speaker at our EvoMed Summit kickoff event at ABC Home. In that event she dared to mention the elephant in the room for Functional Medicine. As a new doctor with student loans, she can't afford to see herself.

In that talk, that you can see here, she shared the solution to this problem was to "harness the digital technologies that are in our pockets that expand our reach and offer functional medicine services to the public at affordable prices".

Fast tracks a few months later, Dr. Berzin has her own new practice, Parsley Health, where she will be putting this into practice and setting a new model for functional medicine to be delivered at scale.

In this podcast you will learn

  • How digital technology can help make Functional Medicine affordable
  • The tools Dr. Berzin will be using in her new practice
  • How different providers can create a remarkable patient experience

New Models of Naturopathic Medicine

Episode #24

New Model Week: Naturopathic Medicine

Whilst at Naturopathic Medical School, Dr. Sara DeFrancesco realized there weren't many options for NDs emerging from school. Either become an employee on salary (making little impact on her student loan debt) or take a position working for another doctor and lose a large percentage of her earnings disappear. Was there another way?

Sara DeFrancesco

So, Dr. DeFrancesco created a new path and a new practice, called Thriving Force Natural Medicine. She has learned from a diverse groups of organizations, not only other providers with more business savvy, but also some of our work at the Evolution of Medicine. We are excited to feature young doctors looking to break the mold and attract the top graduates into integrative medicine.

On this podcast you will learn

  • The systemic problems of business training for doctors

Creating a Thinking Environment

Dr. Donna Embree has been practicing a Naturopathic Doctor since the mid 1990s, before that she was a childhood educator. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Embree has taught doctors and other practitioners in holistic, bioenergetic and integrative medicine. One area of her teaching that is unique surround best practices in the patient / practitioner relationship.

As our medical model evolves to treat chronic and autoimmune diseases, getting patient 'compliance' and engagement is key. There are many strategies that are being used, but none are as effective as creating a "Thinking Environment", which comes from Nancy Kline's book "Time to Think". These strategies can also be used very effectively for creating great communication in your staff team.

The Evolution of Sex Therapy

One of our favorite regulars at the Functional Forum in NYC is TheSexMD, psychiatrist Dr. Madeleine Castellanos. Her new book Wanting to Want gets into some of the most interesting areas of medical evolution that reflect her unique practice, like functional medicine and mind/body medicine.

As the link between sexual health and overall health becomes more and more clear, having skills and capacity to help with these issues is important for any truly holistic medical practice. Last week’s podcasts on vulnerability are very relevant in this area as well. Will you be trusted enough for your patients to open up in this area?

Madeline-Castellanos-MD

What you will learn:

  • Why the mind / body connection is key to evolution of sexual health
  • Our new understanding of placebo and how to maximize it
  • Physical factors that influence optimal sexual health

Disrupting Therapy: Vulnerability at Scale

Back in June, my room mate at MindBodyGreen's Revitalize conference was "The Angry Therapist", John Kim. He is a licensed family therapist and has such an interesting story and mission, and is on a mission to disrupt therapy as we know it using a combination of technology and community.

Check out his great talk from Revitalize, definitely the funniest talk of the weekend!

What you will learn

  • Why technology has the potential to disrupt therapy as we currently know it
  • How John's vulnerability on his blog launched his brand (and what we can all learn)
  • The important role of exercise in optimal mental health and how to inspire it in patients

Radical Vulnerability: Developing Trust

Episode #18

Dr. Leana Wen is on a mission to change medicine. That road can be a little bumpy, especially when you ask physicians to change the way they practice. If her book, 'When Doctors Don't Listen' caused a stir among her colleagues, her ideas about physician openness opened the door to outrageous online abuse. Check out her amazing talk from TEDMED 2014!

This week on the Functional Forum we are talking about vulnerability in medicine. In this podcast Dr Wen argues, and we 100% agree, that physicians need to learn to be vulnerable with patients as it is in the only, and quickest, way to develop trust with patients. In the infectious disease model, this was not a necessary skill, but as medicine evolves to treat the causes of modern epidemics, this is an idea whose time has come.

What you will learn

  • How the physician community reacted to her calls for more transparency
  • 3 strategies for developing trust quickly with patients
  • What Functional Medicine can learn about selling supplements with integrity

Everest Learning Academy

This is our most exciting story of our podcast so far! We welcome Dr. Adiel Tel-Oren to the show, as well as Kathleen McManis. Dr Tel-Oren is a Functional Medicine doctor that travels extensively lecturing and holding skin lesion removal clinics of which the proceeds go to support his humanitarian efforts in Nepal. The Everest Learning Academy is a network of schools, community outreaches, orphanages, and day care centers that educate, nurture, and protect thousands of disadvantaged children in remote villages from child trafficking, prostitution and slavery.

Solving the Sleep Epidemic

Sleep is one of the biggest areas of concern in modern medicine. Not only is lack of sleep being fingered as a leading cause of all sorts of chronic diseases, but there is an alarming lack of sleep specialists in the country to take care of these problems. As we have featured regularly in the Functional Forum or on this podcast, technology is stepping up to scale solutions to this problem.

Rachel-Salas

Dr. Rachel E. Salas is an assistant professor in Neurology at Johns Hopkins in Maryland. She has been working on a new app that empowers primary care, internal medicine and other practitioners to deliver great sleep care throughout the medical system, rather than just in the office of a sleep medicine specialist.

Endobiogeny - Advanced Systems Biology

Episode #12

"Holism is the tendency in nature to form wholes bigger than the sum of the parts through creative evolution"  —Jan Smuts One of the important bedrocks of Functional Medicine is systems biology, a way of looking at the body that focuses on the interaction between bodily systems. This is a necessary framework for understanding complicated, chronic conditions.

Kamyar-M-Hedayat

The American Society of Endobiogenic Medicine and Integrated Physiology takes this philosophy a step further, looking at deeper levels of systems interaction and holism with a specific focus on the endocrine system and it's key role in laying the framework for dynamic adaptation. In this enlightening half hour we speak to Kaymar Hedayat MD, the President of this society, about their framework and the implications for optimal endocrine management and standard of care. Health Evolution or Revolution?

Episode #10

MarcWinn

Last week I announced through social media, and also at the Functional Forum, that I would be giving my first TEDx talk at TEDxStPetersPort, on the island of Guernsey on March 26th 2015. The man who gave me the slot is Marc Winn, a man with a plan to help Guernsey, a tax haven with 65,000 residents, into the healthiest place on the planet, as part of a greater plot to make it the best place to live on earth by 2020. Functional Medicine and technology will form the bedrock of this minor revolution. I am sure you will as inspired as I am by this great man and some of his ideas. What you will learn

  • Why Guernsey is perfectly placed for a sustainable health revolution
  • What lessons changing medicine can learn from Uber
  • Why bureaucracy is the biggest factor holding humanity back from greatness

Bio Intelligent Medicine

Episode #9

Where is the leverage in improving population health? Dr. Eden Fromberg is an OB/GYN from NYC and thinks it starts earlier than we think, and has been a passionate advocate for evolving birthing practices for a long time. You might have seen her in the film The Business of Being Born, which had a profound effect on my life. You can see it on Netflix or watch it on YouTube.

Dr. Fromberg is an amazing doctor and has a ton of value to add to all varieties of practitioners and patients. This podcast covers birthing, functional, structure, visceral, chakras, manipulation and much much more in this broad ranging discussion of "Biointelligence", a core principle that drives her practice. We cannot recommend her work on this discussion, highly enough! What you will learn

  • The new science on the microbiome and the birth process (placental microbiome!)
  • What the 'mechanobiome' and  why it is so important to overall health
  • How you can improve health, structure and function with basic movement

From Doctor to Entrepreneur

Episode #8

Amongst the many problems facing medicine currently, one looms the largest. The two groups that really need medicine to work for them, are being failed by the system. Patients are not getting the care they need to meet the complex, chronic epidemics we now face and doctors have been relegated to cogs in a machine. Our vision is to change that. We envision a patient centered medical system where physicians are empowered to be a central part of their local health community, 'quarterbacking' the care of those people that find themselves to be out of balance. We have been looking for a long time for partners in this endeavor, and in Freedom Practice Coaching, we believe we have found those partners. Matt Lowman and Charlie Webb, the two principals of FPC, bring expertise in diverse areas and have brought it together to create a business that is inspiring, educating and coaching doctors towards controlling their own destinies and building robust local practices focused on patient empowerment. Matt will be speaking on our November 5th Functional Forum and we took some time to interview them about their innovative system. What you will learn

  • Their WHY. What is at the heart of Freedom Practice Coaching?
  • How to turn employees into an amazing practice team
  • Why aggressively educating your community is the best way to ensure unending new patients

Our understanding of how toxins affect our health is growing rapidly and moving onto a national stage, with incredible organizations like Environmental Working Group (EWG) leading the charge. During our September Functional Forum we had an environmental medicine panel with Dr. Frank Lipman and Heather White, Executive Director of EWG.

Debra-lynn-dadd

Debra has been a great supporter of our for a couple of years and we are very excited to share her groundbreaking work with our tribe. In this podcast you will learn:
